/ about

he / him

Shu Kinouchi is a Japanese dancer and choreographer based in Los Angeles whose work moves between performance, theater, and installation. Through choreographic installations, he uses objects, repetition, and spatial systems to explore support, intimacy, and human disconnection. His practice is shaped by cross-cultural friction and the gap between stated values and lived practice.

Kinouchi has performed with L.A. Dance Project since 2020, and previously with Houston Ballet and Tulsa Ballet. He trained at Hamburg Ballet School and the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School at American Ballet Theatre. Throughout his career he has collaborated with choreographers including Aszure Barton, William Forsythe, Christopher Wheeldon, Jessica Lang, Stanton Welch, Ma Cong, Jodie Gates, and many others. With LADP, he has performed internationally in works by Benjamin Millepied, Bobbi Jene Smith & Or Schraiber, Rauf "Rubberlegz" Yasit, and Dimitri Chamblas, among others — appearing at the Sydney Opera House, Joyce Theater New York, Théâtre du Châtelet, Philharmonie de Paris, Dubai Opera, and the Museum of Islamic Art in Qatar.

As a freelance artist, Kinouchi was featured in PhotoVogue in 2024 in a portrait by Dan Chan, performed a lead solo in RZA's production A Ballet Through Mud, and his performance in the experimental film SHU (周) by Mike Schwartz was selected for the LA Dance Film Festival. In 2025, he serves as Creative Lead for the Everybody Dance LA! Summer Intensive at LA Dance Project.
